Bachelor of Arts in English

Degree Requirements (120 cr.)

The Bachelor of Arts in English is a four-year, undergraduate degree for students who love reading and writing, who wish a solid grounding in Anglo-American literature for secondary or postsecondary teaching, who wish to prepare for graduate or professional study, or who wish to develop analytical and expressive skills valuable in many careers. The major consists of at least 31 credit hours above the 100 level in English language and literature courses: 13 credit hours are specified to ensure that all majors have a common background in literary interpretation and history; 18 credit hours are chosen from among advanced courses.

Arts and Sciences General Education Core

Information Literacy (Communication Skills) – 10 hrs

Cultural Literacy (Foreign Language) – 6 hrs at the 2 nd year level

Math – 3 hrs

Humanities – 8-9 hrs

Biological Science and Physical Science – 13 hrs

Social Science – 15 hrs

Major (30 cr.)-A minimum of 30 credit hours in courses above the 100 level in one of three major areas: humanities; social and behavioral sciences; or natural, information, and mathematical sciences, with a grade of C- or better in each course, unless specified otherwise in degree-specific programs. No more than 15 credit hours in 200-level courses may be used to satisfy this requirement. The 200-level courses in a foreign language may not be used to satisfy both the concentration requirement and the foreign language requirement.

  • ENG-L 202 Literary Interpretation
  • ENG-L 297 English Literature to 1600
  • ENG-L 298 English Literature from 1600 to 1800
  • ENG-L 299 English Literature Since 1800

Students may substitute two appropriate 300-level courses for any one of the survey courses-ENG-L 297, ENG-L 298, ENG-L 299.

One 3-credit-hour course in American literature.

ENG-L 495 Individual Reading in English (1 cr.) Students must complete the one-credit senior research project in conjunction with a 300- or 400-level English course.

Students may also substitute one 200- level or above 3-credit-hour literature course from another field or discipline upon approval by the English faculty.
