Chemistry
The Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry centers on a traditional core that includes organic, analytical, inorganic, and physical chemistry, as well as biochemistry and mathematics. These courses are complemented by requirements in the arts, the social sciences, and humanities, including areas such as history, English, sociology, psychology, foreign languages, and information sciences. Students planning to enter graduate or professional school after earning a bachelor's degree may consider IU Kokomo's preprofessional tracks in biology, premedicine, and predentistry. Students interested in teaching chemistry at the secondary level can earn a chemistry degree while also taking an additional 32 credit hours of methods and professional education through the Division of Education to prepare for teacher certification.
In addition to the extensive laboratory and classroom experiences offered through the chemistry program, students have research opportunities through IU Kokomo's Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI). Chemistry majors may also earn up to 12 elective credit hours through independent study, which involves choosing an area of research, conducting the research, and presenting their findings both in writing and in an oral presentation.
Careers
Graduates with a degree in chemistry work in many different fields, including foods and nutrition, biochemicals, environmental science, nuclear power, the petroleum industry, and pharmaceuticals, among others. Students can combine their chemistry degree with the teacher certification program to teach in high school. Chemistry is also an excellent major for students planning to pursue graduate or professional study to become physicians, dentists, or research or academic chemists.
