Steps to Orientation

What is New Student Orientation?

New Student Orientation lays the foundation for your success at Indiana University Kokomo! You'll learn about registering for classes, navigating campus, how to get the most out of your courses, and how to use our many wonderful supports and resources. You'll also get to meet faculty, staff, student leaders, and fellow new students to help welcome you to our campus. We are excited to meet you and members of your family at this great event.

When is New Student Orientation?

We have several dates to choose from. Each date is first-come, first-serve, and slots fill up quickly.

On the day of each Orientation, check-in opens at 1:00 pm, with the full program beginning at 1:30 pm. The formal program will end by 5:00 pm, but we recommend that you plan some flexibility (perhaps 60-90 minutes) into your afternoon for class registration and exploring campus.

Click the “Register for Orientation” button above to fill out our RSVP form – available dates are listed there.

Be aware that if you are transferring to our campus from another college/university, we recommend that you attend Orientation in June, July, or August. Your first step to joining us, then, is to call the Office of Student Success and Advising at 765-455-9405 to schedule an individual advising session.

How should I prepare?

After you have filled out the RSVP, you’ll get messages and reminders to help you be ready. A couple of key pieces:

  • SET UP YOUR OFFICIAL IU ACCOUNT AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE YOUR VISIT TO ORIENTATION. See the instructions below for how to do this.
  • On the day of your Orientation, come ready for check-in on time, and with your picture ID.
  • Park in the student parking area by Kresge Auditorium and the Kelley Student Center.

If you have questions, please contact the Office of Student Success and Advising at 765-455-9405; email us at, or stop by room 223 of the Kelley Center on campus.

How do I set up my official IU account?

To establish your ADS (Computer) and IU e-mail accounts prior to attending New Student Orientation, click below and follow the instructions. It just takes a few minutes, but is crucial to your visit being worthwhile and helpful to you! If you need assistance, call 765-455-9405.

If you have set up your official IU e-mail account before you register for Orientation, your RSVP confirmation will go to that account. So, if you don't happen to see your confirmation in your personal e-mail when you submit your RSVP, consider checking your IU e-mail to see if it is there instead.

Set up your ADS (Computer) and IU e-mail accounts

University Active Directory Service (ADS) Account & Indiana University Email

As a student, you will need an ADS computer account to access the technology resources available through Indiana University Kokomo. You will use this account to register for classes, and to log on to the student computers in the classrooms, labs, and the library. This account also gives you access to your Indiana University Kokomo email, One.IU, Canvas, printing on campus, and online computer training. Also, make sure you get your Cougar Card – carry it with you at all times. It is your university identification card, and is required for many services you will use on campus.

At least 48 hours prior to arriving for orientation, you should create your ADS computer account. If you have internet access at home, you can create this account by going online to One.IU or, you can stop by the UITS-Kokomo helpdesk at Indiana University Kokomo, located in the library, Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m – 9 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Your ADS computing account is required for using any technology service on campus.

On the ADS access management system web site, click on the link create my first IU computing account. When creating your ADS computer account, you will be prompted to enter your last name, date of birth, and your 10-digit University ID Number. After entering this information, you will be prompted to verify the information. Once your information has been verified, the system will then create your ADS computer account.

You will choose your username from several options – select the one you want.

Your official university email address will be: (example:

Then, you will be required to create a secure passphrase. Follow the onscreen instructions for setting up your passphrase. Never save your ADS account username and passphrase into a web browser or web site. Hackers know exactly where this information gets stored and can grab your identity in the blink of an eye.  Always type your passphrase each and every time you log into a computer. NEVER save your username and passphrase.

It can take up to 24 hours before you can use this ADS account and your email account.  If you have questions or problems, please call the UITS-Kokomo IT Support Center at (765) 455-9315.

Within 24 hours after setting up your Indiana University ADS computing account, you must test your account by logging into One.IU online at or by coming to the UITS-Kokomo Helpdesk in the library, Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. – 9 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  You must test your account before your attending scheduled Orientation day. Also, always check your university email daily to ensure you are getting all official university emails and information about your academic experience.

Indiana University provides student email – Umail.  Umail is powered by Google and is similar to Gmail.  Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your university email account. It is critical that you check this email account daily during your college experience with Indiana University. All official university email is sent to you through this account – bursar information, financial aid information, advising and enrollment information, parking information, etc. If you do not check your university email regularly, you will miss important information which could affect your college experience at IU Kokomo. Students are able to keep their IU Umail account after they graduate!

You can access your email via One.IU at Log into One.IU and click on the Umail app.
