IU Kokomo Students Visit Guatemala
During spring break ten IU Kokomo students
traveled to Guatemala as a practicum for the course Hispanic Culture
and Healthcare, team taught by Dr. Linda Wallace,
JR
Pico, and Christine Taff.
The group traveled with Indianapolis
based Ambassadors for Children and spent a week in the city of
Antigua.
During the day the group traveled to small towns and villages
in the departments of Secatepeque and Esquintla helping local
organizations with projects.
They spent one day in the community of San Miguel Dueñas
(about 10 miles outside of Anitgua) working at a library project
that offers children after school enrichment opportunities.
The students prepared games, activities and crafts around the
theme of the five senses.
The group also traveled to the department of Esquintla where
they did lice treatments on approximately eight hundred children in
rural villages. During
their free time the students had the opportunity to learn about Guatemala and
its culture and traditions.
They saw large street processions as the people of
Antigua
prepared for Easter, climbed an active volcano, learned to make
tortillas at a rural farm, and got to practice speaking Spanish.
It was a wonderful learning
experience for IU Kokomo students and faculty alike.
